Thinking of freediving in the Philippines? Here's my experience at Panglao Kalikasan Dive Resort in Panglao, Bohol.
When talking about Bohol, almost instantly you will think about the Chocolate Hills and tarsiers. But now, it has also become one of the Philippines’ best freediving destinations. So on our visit to this province, we dropped by Panglao Kalikasan Dive Resort and made sure to tick this activity off my bucket list!

The Diving Location

Even if you are not staying at Panglao Kalikasan Dive Resort, day visitors are allowed to enter and try diving. The resort charges an entrance fee, and offers various activities such as cliff jumping, scuba diving, and freediving. Because I had limited time, I could only do the “fun dive”, an hour-long beginner activity at the foot of the cliff.
Our Diving Gear

I arrived at the resort wearing only a rash guard and did not bring any freediving gear. Fortunately, the resort has a well-stocked dive shop conveniently located at the entrance. The shop offers a variety of diving equipment for sale and also provides rental gear for visitors who prefer not to bring their own. Since I was there for a freediving session, they provided me with a mask, snorkel, and a pair of fins, which were all I needed for the activity.
A Quick Briefing

Before we headed to the deeper part of the sea, our guide taught us the proper breathing technique and gave a quick briefing on what we should and shouldn’t do during the session. We weren’t wearing life vests, but a lifebuoy was available, which we could hold onto if needed. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely confident at first since I’m not a strong swimmer. However, the instructor was reassuring and experienced, which helped calm my nerves and made me feel more comfortable about going ahead.
Freediving with a School of Sardines

So cool with a school of sardines.
After several attempts at diving, the movements gradually began to feel more natural. As I descended a little deeper, I finally experienced the famous sardine run. It was slightly eerie at first, but undeniably spectacular to be surrounded so closely by such a massive, swirling school of fish.
As a beginner, I likely only reached a depth of about 1-2 metres, but even at that level, it was already incredible. Overall, it was a memorable introduction to freediving and underwater life. I would definitely love to stay longer next time – one hour felt like it passed in an instant.
Fears Conquered + A Tick off my Bucket List

If you haven’t tried freediving, this is your sign to do so. It was fun and exhilarating, with almost no prior experience needed. As long as you stay calm and listen to your guide’s instructions, you’ll enjoy this underwater activity. Don’t forget to add it to your itinerary when visiting Bohol in the Philippines!
